Statement of intent.
My chosen theme for my GCSE Level Photography exam is 'Portraits'. To specify, I will be focusing on trying to copy certain photographers as well as adding my own creativity and imagination to my work. I have decided to do this theme because I think that it allows me to be mindful with my work and explore different camera techniques; also improving the skills I have already learnt and showing it through my portfolio. I will create a final gallery of images but also possibly create Movie Covers as if it were a shoot for a Cinema Film .To make my work the best it can be, I intend to carry out many different research methods of my theme 'Portraits'. I will research and replicate a few photographers work that I think matches the theme I am carrying out. For example, Yousuf Karsh; his work consists of a range of lighting colors and the use of Photoshop. His work includes black and white photography as well as using a shadows throughout all his works.
In order to copy the work of Yousuf Karsh, I will watch tutorial videos on YouTube provided by my teachers so I am able to gain knowledge on how to Photoshop my work like Yousuf Karsh does. With the lighting/shadows effects, I will hopefully try and visit art galleries that contain monochrome filter pictures only so that my work can be influenced by this type of art style. I hope to use all forms of media to enhance my knowledge of different types of photography to find the best decision for me. I will make a Pinterest account so I can be inspired everyday on ways to improve and replicate the work from certain artists/photographers. I will also use Chrome in order to grasp the concept of different photographers so I am capable of using ideas from their portfolios. I will also use forms of old media such as magazines, books to increase my understanding of different ideas that I am able to reproduce whilst giving credit. I intend to capture a variation of images to include in my portfolio of my chosen topic of Portraits. I will take 30-35 photos per person inside the school environment and a public environment which will include a maximum of four models present.
All of my photo shoots will be influenced by the artists that I have mentioned , but I will also put my own creativity on my photos so that they do not look completely identical to the artists that I am taking inspiration from. I will complete 2 or 3 photo shoots with a different style in which they will have a contrasting and appealing outcome that shows my whole work in photography. I hope to achieve this as well as broadening my realization of different techniques I can use to make my work the best it can be. I quite like the idea of doing a fashion shoot that shows the different seasons, this would fit in with magazine idea. I would like to experiment with a wide range of techniques within my work. I have a manual DSLR Canon camera which I will take all of my photographs on, but I would also like to experiment with my own mobile phone camera to see the effects that I can create with it. I will also try to push myself to be more creative within Photoshop, learning how to use the image adjustment layer for Black & White, exposure, levels and contrast. I will also experiment with new techniques within photo shop I have 3 months to produce my Website of work towards the production of my final piece.
I aim to complete my initial research within the 2 week and start photographing by the 3rd week in order to give me the time I need to show progression. I will then continue to develop my work in photoshop and be prepared to go out again with my camera and capture new images to enhance my project. When I have completed the project, I will select my best photography outcomes and display them in my final gallery to show how well I've done throughout this project so far As my project progresses I will use annotations throughout my webpage labelling my ideas and development clearly. This will also help me to reflect and work on the work I produce. I will mainly seek advice from my Teachers on how to make my work better, as I’m always aiming to push myself to extraordinary levels. I will also watch demonstrations and find my own as well to help me develop my skills and knowledge of Photoshop. After the creation of my final portfolio I will write a final evaluation on the project as a whole, reflecting on what went well and what I would do differently or change given the time. A 3 month portrait project.

CONTEXT
"Steve McCurry born in 1950 is best known for his vibrant high quality color photographs that document both human struggles and joy. Having travelled the globe for over thirty years to numerous different countries McCurry has photographed warzones, burning oil fields, refugee camps, ship breaking yards and monsoons all over the world. He brought the world the first images of the conflict in Afghanistan, including his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gular, that has become one of the world's most iconic photographs. His work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture." I have found this source from the following website: https://photofocus.com/inspiration/on-photography-steve-mccurry-1950-present/
COMPOSITIONIn this photograph by Steve McCurry, I can see that he has used several compositional techniques to make the face of the girl stand out. He has used the Rule of Thirds, with the eyes of the girl being on the sweet spot. This draws the viewer into the focal point and also causes an emotional reaction to the image. The framing of the red cloth against the contrasting green background contrasts with the face tones and makes the face stand out. The curve of the cloth creates leading lines which we also see in the shape of the face. I can also see that the image is softly lit from the right hand side, highlighting the eyes and main face, with shadows forming around the hairline, this helps to frame the face. The white of the eyes really stands out and draws you in, this is not a happy expression and leaves you wondering if the young person is traumatized. The background is soft and blurry and so McCurry has not used a deep depth of field, he may have used a 50mm lens and a shallow F stop, such as 11, to capture this image. In my opinion this is not a studio shot, it may have been taken on location but he may have used a reflector to bounce the soft light into her eyes which makes the image come to life.
CONNECTIONS
He intends to show what war does to not only the landscape, but to the people who inhabit that land. "Most of my images are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person's face. This inspires me to take photos of unique things like warzones showing how people suffer throughout. Its amazing how he has thought of such an idea it makes it so appealing to the eye. I would like to do the same using a canon camera to take photos of something that's related to Steve Mc curry photography. I will follow the theme of disturbing and compelling. I like the way how the frames have been shot and cut out for that sweet touch to the photos
COMMENT
I like Steve Mc Curry's work as its got a special meaning to it. It shows the world what people go through but through pictures and not videos. Broke homes scars and blood; It shows it all. A very good picture was taken by him in Pakistan of a girl with bright green eyes this was a very famous shot it showed the sadness in they girls eyes. You could see tears in her eyes showing it was an unfortunate event that had occurred . I love how Mc Curry took risks to show the world what under developing country's are having to go through

Context
This photo was taken by Paul Apalkin representing glass and mirror's composition to show the context on how her emotions are based upon her feelings on how it can deflect on her feelings and emotions. Limited info was found but picture stood out to me.
Composition
The woman in the photo also looks fragile and fed up, which is indicated through the very small subtle tattoo, dark nails and thin loose hair, She also has 0 facial expressions but it still very vivid to me that show she's kind of frustrated and fed up. The use of more arms implies that she can she can barely hold up the mirror and that someone is helping; this implies she has little strength. The person in the mirror could be the person she wants us to see and the other hand could be of that persona. Her eyes in the photo are bold and dark as if she is in charge and not afraid to directly face the camera whereas the image not in the mirror is in profile and turned away from the cameras' The camera effectively uses the angles to paint a picture and show the reader the girls emotions. He effectively uses the mirror to reveal this. Its also mysterious because there are too many arms in the photo graph which leaves you wondering and questioning who the other person is. The dark background of the photo also adds to the darker atmosphere. The calm and darker mood create a bigger contrast.
I think this photo was inspired by the title conceptual as it's different a bit odd and quirky and quite abstract. I think the mood of this photo is mystery and confusion and also a sense of being on edge. I think this is because i think the mirror is showing that you can't always see everything, but it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Lee Friedlander was an American photographer and an artist. Within Friedlander's work the most noticeable thing which is emphasized in a lot of his images when focusing on reflections is that they are mainly store front reflections which would consist of areas of street signs, posters, vehicles and etc. Another one of the key factors I have noticed simply through observation of his images is that within his work a figure/s are always present. IN my own personal view, Friedlander transferred the way of viewing the city in his photography in some of his images by some how showing a contrast in lifestyle. In a creative sense some of the images showcase quite upscale store fronts whereas the reflections that you see highlighted in the image show a completely different lifestyle on the spectrum with fragments of urban houses and so forth. It is clear that Friedlander purposefully photographed his subjects to portray something as most of his images slightly have a repeated pattern.
Comment
The use of the formal elements is emphasized throughout his images and they play a key part in the organization of his shots. The main formal elements Friedlander has focused on purely based on observation is line, composition and color. It is clear that Friedland has purposefully chosen to shoot his images in black and white as it is a clear theme he strongly continues throughout his set of images. Visually, I would argue that Friedlander may have chosen to do this as I feel as though the amount of visual information that is being displayed throughout his images is enough to communicate with to the audience in black and white rather than it being overshadowed from the use of color. I also feel like it is also because the image being in black and white gives the reflection so much more credit than color would as it is enough to clearly showcase the skill of the photographer and it shows how the reflection plays an important role as a fundamental feature within their work.

The image has a lot of photography techniques for example Yousuf's professional usage of the rule of thirds which was done brilliantly. The photographer used the rule of thirds to make the model the center of attention which he successfully did since all of my focus is on the model. I would like to achieve something like this because it looks really professional and this is something that can look amazing on the cover of a fashion magazine which is something that I am aiming for, for my project. His use in lighting is fantastic to because it shines only on the model which shows the viewer the main point of the image which also doesn't confuse the viewers. I believe that this photo was taken on a stage since there are curtains behind the model and he is clapping as if he was in the audience.
Connections
I absolutely love the style of Yousuf's work because of how eye catching and dull the colors. His photographs have a sort of old vintage look to them, it's almost like the lights on the portraits make the models look from the early 1900s. His photographs stand out and really bring out his unique style of doing his shoots differently.
Composition
The theme of this portrait is dark, sympathetic and depressing this is the complete opposite of my chosen photographer Paul Appalkin as his portrait themes are dark and vintage pictures. The picture looks like a middle aged man from the mid 1900s he seems to be smoking a cigarette this could be a picture linked with stress. The black and white effect adds to this picture and shows a mood of struggle and stress, a colorful mood would not suit the theme of this picture because of the emotion the man is showing. This photo is from classical photography in the 1940s and does not link to my project because my project is based on more modern photography. I will use black and white themes in my portraits, but I will use it alongside with colour to get a mix of emotions in my images.
Looking at this picture I can see that the photographer has used the rule of thirds to create a strong composition in this photo, the models eye is in the top left hand corner in the sweet spot which makes the viewer focus on this part of this photo.I can also see that the model is positioned on the left hand side and the hands are in the final third which also draws your attention to them. The way the photo is tightly cropped makes the model close to the picture plane this makes it feel like you could almost reach out and touch him which gives a vivid effect. This is a studio shot which is beautifully lit, the light source is coming from the bottom right hand of the photo to highlight the mans nose and one half of his face, the light also highlights the outside shape of his thumb and picks out the swirling smoke of the cigarette. The contrast of the bright light of his face creates a contrast with the black background which makes the face stand out more. I can also so pinpoints of light in his pupils which brings life to the face. The camera angle is slightly looking up this could imply that we are looking up at him and admiring him, which fits in with the person he was. I can also see strong leading lines that form a kind of triangle shape between his shoulder his head and his hands, which again draws your attention to his face.Because this is a studio shot, In my opinion I think that the camera would of been on a tripod to maintain a crisp outcome.

Yousuf Karsh very old type pictures even older than her era but with my project I like to use more interesting and modern pictures. Her portraits are sometimes disturbing but I like how she shows different types of people from different sides of society. In conclusion her work inspires me and maybe in the future I will use her portraits too help me if I ever want to make that type of portraits. I also use bright colours in my work I use dark colors to balance the colors but I don't just use black and white so I don't believe I will use these type of portraits for this project.

Mood board showing black & white.
Street photography mood board
Salford Quays shoot.
I am starting my projects by taking inspiration from Paul Apalkin and developing it into something of my own. I would like take inspiration from them because I believe that these images have the qualities of which I want which is what I would to achieve since I believe that they look the most simple but most interesting to look at which is my goal.
I will be taking pictures outside which will make the photos look more natural and acceptable for a magazine cover. Then I will take these photos to Photoshop and turn them into black and white. The camera setting will be changed throughout so it can fit with the theme of the image taken which will be black and white.
The white balance may be on 100 depending on the location of the photo which is outdoors . I may use a reflector to display a warmer side tone on my friends face. I will also use Photoshop so I am able to achieve the final products.
The camera is a Canon DSLR with a standard lens but i shall not take a tripod with me as i will be constantly on the move. I will also take with me my mobile phone and also use this for a camera and experiment with some filters.
Location shoot in Salford.

This would be my best photo because of quality and background |
This would be my worst image because my model is not looking into the camera. |
Experimenting on Photoshop.
Here I have changed my image to black and white using the inspiration from my mood board. I don't think it has given the effect I wanted therefor I will experiment more on Photoshop.
Mo Patel
This would be my best because of the background and pose. |
This would be my worst image because of the camera obstructing the photo. |
This would be my best due to angling and perfect white balance.
|
This would be my worst image because his eyes are closed. |

Danyal Akhtar
This would be my best image due to the perfect portrait and white balance |
This would be my worst image due to the cut out and low white balance |
Editing pictures using photopea.
My portrait shoot plan
I started my project inspired by Magdiel Lopez, who is known for using Photoshop to make her images look unique. I really appreciate the way his works are portrayed as strange and attractive to the audience in order to keep the audience's interest and interest. I will use a head-to-shoulder face close-up to add it to my work, and then I will try to use photoshop and possibly add different colors, such as bright black and white colors to enhance my series of images.
The equipment I will use is a Canon DSLR, which can be attached to a tripod to obtain a series of images in exactly the same position. I will use a faster shutter speed to better capture the features of the model. I will use a white background with infinite curves to make the background smooth and easier to retouch with Photoshop. You may need a separate study light or
Moblie light so that the light can shine on the model’s face and make them visible. The camera settings will be changed at any time to suit the subject of the captured image. Depending on the position of the photo, the white balance can be 100 or auto. I will use the golden reflector to show a warmer shadow on the model's face. I will also use Photoshop to realize the final product. I need to make sure that my camera is loaded and delete the photos after uploading so that my camera has more free space.
My model will be my friend. I will tell them to bring colorful clothes that suit my theme. I will also tell them to bring accessories as props for my images. For darker color themes, my background should be white / gray; but for my softer color themes, the background doesn't matter because it will be rendered by Photoshop.
My goal is to take approximately 1020 photos of each person using two background colors and to try different lighting techniques to find the correct result that suits me.

Third studio photo shoot.
Location shoot:Manchester
Photoshoot with justin
Shoot plan with Justin
For my shoot I'm planning to take pictures for my portrait and third project for this project this shoot:
Location:
I will be doing my shoot in my school studio
Props and models:
For my models I have 3 of my friends who volunteered for me to take some photos of them. I have asked them to wear specific clothing such as dark coloured tracksuits and hats or glasses to meet my criteria.
Equipment:
A set of studio lights that are connected to the camera, these lights can be controlled to go brighter or darker depending on the type of shot I want to take, the lights will have soft boxes so that the lighting is not too harsh.
The camera is a canon DSLR with 50mm and will be on a tripod so that my images are crisp
I will also use hand held reflectors so that I can direct and control my light source

My model Danyal.
This would be my worst image because the model has his eyes closed

This would be the best because the model
is in a good pose and its a clear image |

Edits on Photoshop
Final outcome.
Developing my images using photoshop
For this edit i used a PNG which i will show below this was definitely the most easiest and a tutorial wasn't needed
Photoshop refining my ideas even further.
This is the link i used to do my double exposure because is was straight forward and simple.
This was my final outcome.
This edit was the hardest out the 3 and the most confusing in terms of the tutorial it has a nice outcome but takes a lot of lesson time for one outcome.
Part 3 of using photo shop to develop my images.
Final outcome.
This would be the edit i enjoyed the most and would definitely pursue my photoshop refining in this type, it was very straight forward and nothing too complicated to do and a really sophisticated outcome which is a win win.
I decided to develop my image some more by blurring out the image to make it interesting and anonymous.
Part 4 of using photoshop to refine my images.
This was my image to start of with.
This was my final image.
This image was very fun to make and was my second time making something like this ,no link to the tutorial can be provided because i have mastered this skill to do it off the top of my head. This would be one of the best photoshop option because it has a very sophisticated outcome with no complications.

Double exposure.
For my final gallery.
For my final gallery I'm going to use the double exposure effect I have tried most other techniques but preferred the this effect. For my final image I would develop my images even more to boost my grade would take and Muj would be my model because he's a perfect good sized modeler also makes good pictures which then can develop with photoshop to make my work personal I would add text and do it similar but different at the same time to make it personalized In my final gallery i would have 8-10 photos all fully developed.

Double Exposure.
Lightning Effect.
Dripping Effect.
Evaluation.
My main theme was different because I chose double exposure because its different to other themes and refines your photos to look unique.I found this theme interesting because I was able to take numerous great pictures and then edit them to the highest standard and I could take pictures of things in my interest the theme really allowed me to become extremely creative and come out my comfort zone to show off my skills I used my highest range of skills to refine my photos to the max.
This project really taught me a lot and it has gone over the course of a few months so I had learnt a lot from my peers and also tutorials although I didn't enjoy the project when I started to see how much this would help improve my website and we also took a trip to salford quays to take pictures of our peers and also buildings to show texture on our photos, learning how to edit was also fun we could make our websites look professional.
I used different techniques such as the blur tool and cropping also have learnt a lot of techniques like cut and copy and also cropping an image before I started photoshop I didn't know what to do I only knew how make a picture black and white I didn't even know the shortcut to do that yet I had to do it the long way Yousaf Karsh ,Paul Apalkin ,Steve McCurry were the 3 photographers I had chose.
I would still like to develop my skills even more because there is always room for improvement, All my photos were linked and were all influenced by the researched photographers.I also want to learn how to set up lighting and make my images look the best to there standards lighting is a big thing in photography because it shows the glow in your photos and if you decide to turn them images to black and white then that would make the lighting shine on there there face and make it look good.
